Exercise for fibromyalgia – a systematic review

This summary of a Cochrane review (update: August 17. 2007) is based on the information from 34 randomized trials with a total of 2276 subjects. These studies looked at aerobic exercise capacity, muscle strength and flexibility.

The review showed that in people with fibromyalgia:

-moderate intensity aerobic training for 12 weeks may improve overall well-being slightly and physical function; moderate intensity aerobic exercise probably leads to little or no difference in pain or tender points.
-strength training for 12 weeks may result in large reductions in pain, tender points and depression, and large improvement in overall well-being but may not lead to any difference in physical function.

It is not known if flexibility exercises could improve the symptoms of fibromyalgia according to this review

Would more than 12 weeks for moderate intensity aerobic training show a greater benefit?
